Welcome, and thank you for visiting Depth Psychotherapy and Counselling Services.
This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.
A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.
Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still, treat each guest honourably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.
The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing,
and invite them in.
Be grateful for whoever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond (The Guest house, Rumi).
I work online, and have a private practice in Kingston upon Thames providing in-person sessions to adults around a wide range of issues, including anxiety, depression and loss of meaning, bereavement and loss, abuse, trauma, chronic shame, relationship difficulties, isolation and withdrawal, difficulties involving difference, discrimination and marginalisation, life transitions and creative self-discovery. I also have experience of working therapeutically with more complex issues, such as PTSD, Borderline Personality and Dissociative Identity Adaptations, Physical, Emotional, Sexual, Institutional Abuse, with neurodiverse clients, counselling students and artists.
"All of us have experienced some element of abandonment and mis-attunement in our lives, and sometimes, we are faced with circumstances that obstruct our attunement to our own needs. In therapy we reframe this by seeing ourselves not only as wounded by our parents but also as parented by our wounds. There is an affinity between wounding and healing, but it takes
work to turn the affliction of wounding into a healing potential. Some of the work of therapy involves honouring our symptoms, not fixing or eradicating them, but to come into a different relationship with our suffering and grief." (Transformation in Troubled Times)
I practice a unique and effective method of psychotherapy and counselling based on the relational model of depth psychology which enables me to foster and maintain deep and sustained emotional contact, and a supportive relationship that empowers and embraces difference and diversity.
Depth psychotherapy offers a broad range of approaches that facilitate the exploration of the underlying, repressed, and unconscious motives and patterns that may have been directing your life, and influencing your thoughts, emotions, behaviours, and relationships beneath your conscious awareness. Uncovering these hidden motives can be healing and life-affirming, and can help in developing emotional resilience.
Using a synthesis of therapeutic approaches means that to the best of my ability, I seek to develop a way of working with you which is specifically designed for you, to facilitate the transformation we wish for. The approaches I draw from I draw especially from Humanistic, Relational, Psychodynamic, Existential, Jungian, Archetypal and Transpersonal approaches. In Psychoanalytic work the focus is on how past outmoded patterns repeat themselves, and also can transform themselves, in the present. Existential and Jungian approaches offer unique methods to relieve the manifestations of particular difficulties. Transpersonal
practice draws from dreams, myths, creative mediums and imagination to address deep-rooted emotional concerns, which can have a surprising impact on specific life difficulties. Or, we may explore transpersonal matters such as meaning, calling, soul, ecology and the more-than-personal. Integrative psychotherapy draws from the wisdom of the psyche and its creative and integrative functions to widen perspective, release feeling, to increase self-awareness, and to open doors to new life possibilities.
I offer a caring and empathic space with an approach that cares for the soul. The work of therapy requires human connection and care, and there is nothing else that can replace that fundamental need. That is why this work is so creative and profound for both the client and the therapist. Something happens in therapy that would not happen if you were talking to a friend
or considering things by yourself.
The therapeutic relationship supports us in ways that might not otherwise be possible. and hence why it is the relationship that has healing potential, given that our wounds were created in the cauldron of our earlier relationships. We will work together to build trust, and as the alliance between us strengthens, the therapeutic relationship creates a safe, non-judgmental space where you can feel heard, seen, and understood. This can be a relief and sometimes a revelation.
Qualifications & Training
Professional Development Training:
Therapy can provide a space that is entirely dedicated to you. You may be thinking of coming to therapy for the first time, or you may wish to reengage with therapy. You may be looking for therapy for yourself or for someone you care about. Some people come into therapy simply as a means of supporting themselves in their lives, and to have a space where they can ‘feel and think freely’, and to support their own personal and creative development. Whatever your individual reasons are for coming to therapy; I am here to support you to explore your life circumstances and to find meaning in the challenges and the difficulties you are experiencing in a safe and containing way.
One outcome that may result from depth therapy is an increase in self-awareness and self-confidence. Those who are struggling to find their life purpose, or are searching for a higher calling, or a more meaningful life may seek out depth therapy to gain insights into their unconscious conditioning. As a result, they may feel a greater sense of authentic self and an increased sense of liberation from the concerns affecting them, as well as gaining a deeper understanding of historical family problems, which may facilitate an increased capacity to maintain stronger and healthier relationships.
I work from private offices located in Kingston upon Thames and Hampton Hill. In addition to providing face-to-face therapy, I also offer telephone counselling and online sessions.
I work with clients from Kingston upon Thames, and the surrounding Surbiton, Norbiton, Richmond, Sheen, Twickenham and Putney areas.
The sessions are 50 minutes long. Online and Telephone sessions are £60 per session, and Face-to-face sessions are £75 per session. I have a limited number of concessions for those on lower incomes (Online and telephone sessions only); contact me to enquire about availability. I respectfully request that all sessions are paid for in advance.
I have a cancellation policy and an agreement, which I send to clients at the beginning of our work together. This is a binding agreement which offers clarity around the boundaries of the work.
I offer a free 15-minute telephone appointment. Feel free to arrange an introductory telephone session if you have any questions about how counselling works.
Please contact me by email or by telephone if you would like to arrange an initial assessment session, which will provide an opportunity for us to explore the issues you are struggling with, your reasons for coming to therapy, your hopes and fears, as well as exploring how we can best work together. This enables you to see whether therapy can be beneficial.
I offer weekly sessions on an open-ended basis. Clients are not required to sign up for any length of time, but many choose to work with me long term, in order to support necessary transformation. It is not possible to say how long the work will take to complete. The length and frequency of sessions depends on individual needs and circumstances, for instance, some clients may need more than one session per week.
